| The Dera Gai celebration or St. John’s Day is a cultural festival held each year on June 24 in Aruba that puts traditional songs and dances in the spotlight. If you do a literal translation of “Dera Gai” it means “Burying of the rooster.” No need to go into the details of how this festival was celebrated back in the day (it was a little gruesome for the rooster). While the symbol of the rooster still figures prominently in this festival, as do the brightly colored yellow and red costumes worn by participants, the emphasis in modern times is on the traditional music and dancing. There are also lots of bonfires to mark the occasion. |

Aruba Summer Music Festival, June 29-July 1

| The Harbor Square Arena will be the site for one of the island’s most beloved performance events of the year – the Aruba Summer Music Festival (ASMF). Latin music lovers are especially excited about this year lineup of performers. Opening the festival on June 29 this year will be Ozuna, Nacho, and three of Aruba’s most popular bands: Buleria, NFuzion, and D’Licious. The second night of ASMF on June 30 will feature Victor Manuelle, Fonseca, Eddy Herrera, and Felipe Pelaez. The final day of the festival on July 1 puts soca music in the spotlight with Kes from Trinidad & Tobago joined by local soca favorites Le Groove and Tsunami. |
